Jane is a singer and musician living in Paignton. She sings in a variety of styles from opera to folk and 20th century standards, and also plays the flute with singer songwriter Robert Spence in “Chordial”. Jane also teaches music in schools and privately, including teaching composition.
As a composer, Jane has written incidental music for plays and short pieces for young musicians to play in ensembles. She also arranges music for choirs, including the Torbay Jubilee Choir which she set up in 2012.
She trained in music(singing and flute) at York and Reading Universities. Her performances have covered a wide area both geographically and artistically. She is also a musical director and conductor and has experience of working with a wide variety of performers from local amateur societies, youth groups and professional performers.
Since moving to Paignton, she has conducted several local groups in performance and is the Director of the Torbay Jubilee Choir (a project based choir which performs at civic and other events in Torbay). She has sung as a soprano soloist with local societies, including the Shaldon Singers performance of Haydn’s Creation in May 2013. She has taken small roles and covered roles for New Devon Opera. She has conducted and run workshops for the South Devon Singers (Teignmouth and Ivybridge Community Choirs), and conducted Brixham Operatic and Dramatic Society in a series of staged concerts. She has organised concerts for local community groups, and groups of students in community settings.
In 2013 she set up Red Earth Opera to perform at the Teignmouth Classical Music Festival. Conducting and singing the role of Dido, the performance was well received and Red Earth Opera were immediately invited back to sing again in 2014.
Jane teaches regularly in several schools in Torbay, including running whole class woodwind lessons (flutes and clarinets). She also directs the Concert Winds at the Torbay and South Devon Music Centre. She has qualified teacher status, and has taught music both in primary and secondary schools in Surrey, Hampshire and Torbay. She is a tutor for the Torbay Schools Festival, helping students to prepare and arranging music for the gala concerts at Paignton Palace Theatre and the Riviera Centre.
She also teaches students privately at home, offering singing, flute, piano, theory and aural test preparation to both adults and young students.
She performs regularly in concert, both as a player and a singer, and has also played in the pit for both Brixham and Paignton Operatic Societies. Other notable performances include leading community singing to the Regatta Fireworks on Paignton Green (broadcast live on Palm FM), much acclaimed lunchtime recitals at the Teignmouth Classical Music Festival and winning eight trophies at the Torbay and South West of England competitive music festival, including the Rose Bowl.
Prior to moving to Paignton, she created major roles in community operas for Stephen McNeff and Howard Moody, musically directed a number of concerts, shows and operettas, toured and performed with concert bands, funk bands and a Pink Floyd tribute project. She was also a singing leader for SingUp.
She is also able to transcribe music and to create arrangements both for singers and for instrumentalists.
