Painting The Steps – How Are We Doing?

20th June 2014

D-Day – The Meeting with PCC

Myself (Sandy Wager), Councillor Drean and Debbie Burton met up with PCC to discuss the plans for the steps. I took along my design and explained that throughout the world there are less than 80 art steps designed and when we have painted all of the steps throughout Whitleigh we will be the only ‘Village’ in the world to have done so. This of course will create a lot of publicity, especially in the art world.

This is the official result and announcement of how the meeting went………

Hi all, we had a meeting with the Head of PCC Corporate Property this morning (Sandy, Cllr Drean and myself) and they have agreed (and in fact they think it is a superb initiative) to paint the steps on Whitleigh Green.

So, it is all hands on deck now to support Sandy, and her team of Artists and Whitleigh Primary children, to deliver this project during this summer – as a pilot; if it works, Corporate Property will be keen to enable the rest of the interconnecting walkway steps to be painted (which is part of the Plan). So..

  • Suggested dates for school children to get involved have been ‘pencilled’ in with Maggie – 21st and 22nd July.
  • The steps will be repaired next week  (Thursday or Friday 27th June 2014)
  • The steps will need to be white washed prepared for art before the dates above
  • All volunteers who help with the painting will be provided with refreshments on the day
  • Cllr Drean is funding the repair work and the paint from a Community Grant
  • We need to purchase Masonry paint – Maggie can you help with this?
  • We (PCC – NRT) will be risk assessing and will be responsible for the ‘event’

It’s going to be exciting to see Big Local making a difference – well done Sandy, Maggie and everyone else!

‘A Bit Of A Do’ is usually held at The Tamar Inn, Crownhill, ( Subject to change) with Whitleigh Arts and the Befriending Service with chats & arts and crafts and is aimed at our older residents in Whitleigh over 50 years of age. Free membership.

We have a pick up service for those with disabilities.

We have no community centre  at present and the city of Plymouth is about 4 miles away where all the action is. Most of us in Whitleigh do not have extra money to travel by bus, car or taxi for a social life or to see any form of entertainment.

The main purpose of this group is to get our older local people together for some fun as they are normally stuck in their homes with nowhere to go and no one to see.

Carole Hickling of the Befriending Service and myself, Sandy Wager, Founder of Whitleigh Arts, organised this monthly event for our older people in Whitleigh, we are both volunteers.   We have now appointed our very own Whitleigh resident, Zoe Harrison, as our Whitleigh Befriending Co-ordinator. Zoe can be contacted on 07772120088.

We need drivers in Whitleigh to pick up our older residents and take them to and from these events once per month. If you are able to help us out contact Zoe on the phone number above or Sandy Wager on 01752 313645.

There were about 20 people who came along to our 1st event in June 2014, that is pretty good for a first event, and all really enjoyed it saying that they will bring friends and relatives next time.

In particular one couple we spoke to used to work in The Albemarle way back in the 1950’s when the pub was newly built. The gentleman said he used to scrub the cellar floors on hands and knees and the live entertainment was only on a Saturday night. The lady said that she had to clean out the grates and get the coal fires going before the bars were opened, no central heating back then! They stopped working at the Albemarle around 1984 and had never been back to pub until today.

Do you have any stories about the Albemarle?

We, as a community, need to keep and look after our local businesses. That is why we are passionate about supporting our residents and businesses, doing all we can to bring music, arts, crafts, social activity, dance and culture to Whitleigh.

‘A Bit Of A Do’ is held on the 1st Wednesday of each month and our day trips are on the 3rd Wednesday of the month. (subject to change)

For those of you who have disabilities we have a pick up service to take you to and from our events.  Find out more or book a seat via Carole Hickling at or contact Zoe Harrison.

A Bit Of A Do

A Bit Of A Do

The Whitleigh Big Local team were on hand to answer questions and present their projects to the residents.

Leaflets were delivered to every home in Whitleigh a couple of weeks previously to get the word out and to invite our residents along to the ‘Have Your Say’ meeting.

Quite a few people turned up, but not the numbers we expected, and there were free drinks and cake available, a slide show and face painting.

The general feed back from our residents was positive with a general feeling that good things are planned for all.

Painting Whitleigh Green Steps (Photos)

April 2014

The local school children, along with their lovely teachers, came along to measure the steps on April 24th 2014.  We can now work out how much paint we need so, thank you to all of the children and the teachers!

Many big thanks to Maggie Graham and all of the local school children who came along to help measure the steps.
